Fletcher Steele (1885–1971) was an American landscape architect whose imaginative and pioneering designs significantly influenced 20th-century garden and landscape aesthetics. Born in Rochester, New York, he briefly studied at the Harvard School of Landscape Architecture before beginning his professional career under Warren H. Manning, a noted landscape architect. Although he did not complete his formal education at Harvard, Steele developed a distinctive blend of classical training and personal creativity that would come to define his work.

Lancelot “Capability” Brown (1716–1783) was an influential English landscape architect and gardener often hailed as the father of the English landscape garden. His nickname reportedly came from his habit of informing clients that their estates had great “capabilities” for improvement. Born in Northumberland in 1716, he began his career as a gardener’s boy at the estates of Sir William Loraine, eventually moving to Stowe in Buckinghamshire. There, under the guidance of architect and landscape designer William Kent, he developed his signature approach to the “natural” style of gardening—one that departed from the rigid, geometric gardens popular in Europe at the time. Brown remains celebrated for creating landscapes that seamlessly merge artistic vision with the beauty of the natural world.
